Eagle Pass, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry literally went through the roof this weekend after seizing $132,000 in marijuana in the ceiling of a Chevy Astro van. The seizure occurred on Saturday, July 24 at Bridge II when a CBP officer referred a 1991 Chevy Astro van driven by a 22-year-old Mexican citizen from Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico for a secondary inspection. In secondary, CBP officers discovered discrepancies in the roof area and a CBP canine alerted to the odor of narcotics emanating from the vehicle. A non-intrusive imaging system also indicated discrepancies in the roof area. An intensive examination of the roof area of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of 85 packages containing nearly 132 pounds of marijuana. The marijuana has an estimated street value of $132,000. CBP officers turned the driver over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents for further investigation and seized the contraband and the vehicle. “This significant seizure of narcotics in the roof of a van illustrates the reality of the drug threat our officers face on a daily basis and their resolute determination to interdict contraband at the port of entry,” said Cynthia O. Rodriguez, CBP Port Director, Eagle Pass.
